Fresh colorblocking with vintage vibes, brought to you by easy intarsia.

If you've never worked intarsia before, it's done by bringing the new color up from underneath the last color. That's the whole technique. In this project, you'll only ever work straight vertical lines, so it's a fun way to try a new technique.

​

Study Group is worked flat from the bottom-up and then seamed. It has gentle hip shaping, optional bust darts, and tons of ways to make it your own.

CHOOSE A SIZE

Choose the size closest to your actual upper chest measurement. Upper chest is measured above the full bust, at an angle close to diagonal beneath the underarms, and straight across the back. For more information on choosing a size using your upper chest measurement, visit this blog post.

To fit upper chest:  27.75 (31.75, 35.75, 39.25) [42.25, 44.5, 47.5] (50.5, 53.5, 56.5) in / 69.5 (79.5, 89.5, 98) [105.5, 111.5, 119] (126.5, 134, 141.5) cm

​

Study Group is designed to fit with approximately 3 inches / 8 cm of positive ease at the fullest part of your bust. This pullover is designed to be worn as a shirt, so the underarm is not as deep as some of my designs that are designed to be worn as outer layers. If you are between sizes, consider sizing up so that you have enough room under the arm. The schematic includes the total yoke depth so you can compare it to your body measurements.

I am wearing size 4, Cup 2, with -1 inch / -2.5 cm of positive ease at the full bust and 1 inch / 2.5 cm of positive ease at the upper arm. My upper chest is 41 inches / 102.5 cm (I am between sizes, and chose to size down).

​

If you need additional room for the bust, as I do, working the optional short row shaping will give you the best fit in the shoulders and armholes, while still making room for your chest. Short rows add length to the front only of the garment, so that the hem does not rise in the front.

TECHNIQUES

MATERIALS

​

  • 7 Stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle

  • Waste yarn (for the optional tubular cast-on)

  • Cable needle (for the optional tubular cast-on)

  • Waste yarn or stitch holder

GAUGE

​

22 sts and 35 rows over 4 inches / 10 cm in stockinette stitch with size A needles (I used size 5). 

YARN

​

Wool & Palette Sport

Regenerative, non-superwash wool.


100% Merino/Rambouillet wool; 312 yds / 285 m per 100 g skein. This is a naturally-dyed, 3-ply sport weight yarn with a micron count of 20-21.

 

This yarn knits up with crisp stitch definition, low loft, and has an extremely classy matte appearance. It maintains its bounce and structure with wear, does not bleed, and is low-pill.

Color 4 (Light Denim):  80 (80, 90, 95) [105, 110, 115] (125, 135, 145) yds / 70 (75, 80, 85) [95, 100, 105] (115, 125, 130) m 

​

If working the bust darts you will need an additional 10 yds - 50 yds / 10 - 45 m each Color 2 and 3.

​

The pattern includes yardage for different variations.
